A process for the production of a copper phthalocyanine which process comprises heating, as reactants, a phthalic acid or reactive derivative thereof, a nitrogen source and a copper compound in an inert solvent in the presence of a catalyst and at least one surfactant which enables the said reactants, catalyst and copper phthalocyanine thus produced to be dispersed in the inert solvent during the reaction process and which can be removed or deactivated by hydrolysis with an acid or an alkali;
is free from problems associated with insufficient mixing, non uniform heat transfer and adhesion of the reaction mixture to a reactor wall.
