A sulfamoyl-substituted phenethylamine derivate represented by the general formula
wherein R1 represents an amino group or a mono- or di-lower alkylamino group; R2 represents a hydroxyl group, a lower alkyl group, or a lower alkoxy group; R3 represents hydrogen, halogen, a lower alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group, a phenylthio group, or a phenylsulfinyl group; R4, R5, R6, R7, R8, and R9 are selected independently from hydrogen and lower alkyl groups; R10 represents hydrogen, a lower alkyl group, or a lower alkoxy group; and Y represents oxygen or a methylene group and is oxygen when R2 is a hydroxyl group; or a salt thereof. The compounds exhibit a-adrenergic blocking action and are useful as antihypertensive agents and for the treatment of congestive heart failure. In the preferred compounds according to the invention R3 is hydrogen or lower alkyl.
