  The present invention provides a 2-halogeno-4-alkyl-4,7-dihydro-7-oxo-thieno[3,2-b]pyridine-6-carboxylic acid of the general formula wherein X represents a halogen atom and R represents a lower alkyl group, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof at the carboxyl group, and an antimicrobial agent comprising as an active ingredient the above compound. The compound is useful for protecting a warm-blooded animal from bacterial infection. The present invention also provides new intermediates for production of the compound.
