    Aromatic polyamldes excellent in melt moldability and having good heat resistance, mechanical strength, transparency and excellent gas barrier properties. The aromatic polyamides can be used as the material for containers because of their excellent gas barrier properties, and can protect a product contained therein from a gas.

    A polyamide resin composition which comprises: (A) a random polyamide comprising (a) at least one isphthaloyl diamine component represented by the general formula (I) of wherein R⁰ represents a divalent hydrocarbon group of 4-25 carbons, in a total amount of 50-100 mole %; and (b) at least one diacyloyl diamine component represented by the general formula (II) of -[NH-R⁰-NHCO-Ar-CO)- wherein R⁰ is as defined above and Ar represents a divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group of 6-20 carbons but is not a 1,3-phenylene group, in a total amount of 50-0 mole %, and (B) a polyamide comprising: (c) at least one diamine component of 4-25 carbons or dicarboxylic acid component of 4-20 carbons which have no aromatic nuclei; or (d) at least one aminocarboxylic acid component; or (e) at least one diamine component of 4-25 carbonss,dicarboxylic acid component of 4-20 carbons which has no aromatic nuclei, or aminocarboxylic acid component. The composition has high impermeability and a low glass transition temperature and may be used to manufacture laminates and moulded articles.

    A polyamide resin composition which comprises: (A) an aromatic polyamide resin comprising a dicarboxylic acid component comprising an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a diamine component comprising at least one aliphatic diamine or alicyclic diamine; (B) a fibrous reinforcement; and (C) at least one additive which is a group I, II or III metal salt of a higher fatty acid or an acid ester, partially saponified ester or metal salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid of 26-32 carbons. The resin composition has high fluidity and mold-releasing properties as well as high heat resistance and rigidity, and can be molded without decomposition of the resin.

Polyamide resin compositions containing the aromatic polyamide and a filler are also disclosed.

    A process for producing an aromatic polyamide which comprises: (a) a dicarboxylic acid component which consists of 30-100 mol% of terephthalic acid and optionally 0-70 mol% of at least one dicarboxylic acid other than terephthalic acid, and (b) a diamine component which consists of 50-100 mol% of an aliphatic alkylenediamine of 4-25 carbons and optionally 0-50 mol% of at least one alicyclic diamine of 3-25 carbons, said process comprising a first step of performing melt reaction of said dicarboxylic acid with said diamine, thereby giving a low molecular weight condensate having an intrinsic viscosity [η] of 0.05-0.6 dl/g, a second step of subjecting it to solid phase polymerization, thereby giving an aromatic polyamide precursor having an intrinsic viscosity [η] of 0.5-1.0 dl/g, and a third step of subjecting it to melt polymerization, thereby giving an aromatic polyamide having a desired intrinsic viscosity [η] of 0.8-2.5 dl/g. This process permits the industrial production of high molecular weight aromatic polyamides in an economical and efficient manner.
