    In a method of measurement of BOD value of test solution by comparing dissolved oxygen decrement ΔDO of the test solution with dissolved oxygen decrement of standard solution sterilized test solution is used as the standard solution. Apparatus for conducting the above method is also disclosed. BOD value is calculated using the measured ΔDO by a relation between 1/BOD and 1/ΔDO. The apparatus comprises a column for contacting solution with the microorganism, oxygen electrodes disposed before and after the column for measuring the dissolved oxygen value, whereby in an inject condition, the test solution is fed to the oxygen electrode before the column and in the lead condition the test solution is fed to the oxygen electrode after the column, so that ΔDO can be measured by the two oxygen electrodes. In the apparatus, the inject condition and the load condition are changed by solenoid valves or rotary valves.

    A microorganism that produces 5-aminolevulinic acid, wherein the microorganism has a 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase variant having a reduced inhibitor constant for a 5-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase inhibitor. A microorganism that produces 5-aminolevulinic acid, wherein the microorganism is a photosynthetic bacterium that produces 5-aminolevulinic acid without light irradiation. A process for producing 5-aminolevulinic acid comprising the step of culturing a microorganism that produces 5-aminolevulinic acid in a culture medium under at least one condition selected from the group consisting of (a) less than 1 ppm of dissolved oxygen concentration in the culture medium, (b) from -180 to 50 mV of oxidation-reduction potential in the culture medium, and ( c ) from 5×10⁻⁹ to (KrM - 2×10⁻⁸) (mol of O₂/mℓ·min·cell) of cellular respiration rate, wherein KrM represents the maximum cellular respiration rate when oxygen is supplied in an excess quantity.

    Immobilized cell beads incorporating formulated microbial consortium comprising a synergistic mixture of the following bacterial strains namely, Enterobacter sakazaki, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas sobria selected from the following isolated bacterial strains namely, Yersinia enterocolitica, Aeromonas sobria, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Serratia liquefaciens, Enterobacter sakazaki, Citrobacter amalonaticus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloaca, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus are prepared, the formulated microbial consortium is immobilized in an appropriate immobilizing agent resulting in the formation of beads and the beads are used for instant BOD estimation using an electronic device and the formulated cell beads are reusable and are capable of assimilating most of the organic matter present in varied industrial effluents.
