Photoinducedhydrogenevolution was carried out by usingbipyridiniumsalts as electroncarriers. Hydrogenevolution rate strongly depends on the type of bipyridinium salt. The order of the rate values undergoes a change by the change in the rate-determining step.

PhotosensitizedhydrogenevolutionfrombasicaqueousSiO2colloids is accomplished using N,N′-dipropyl-2,2′-bipyridinium disulphonate, DQSo, (1) as electron acceptor and platinum as catalyst; the charged SiO2colloid allows the formation and stabilization of the intermediate photoproducts and the subsequent formation of hydrogen.
