    High impact resistant polycarbonate, a process for producing said polycarbonate, and a polycarbonate resin composition are disclosed. This polycarbonate consists of a main chain with a cumylphenoxy group, as a terminal group, bonded to at least one end thereof, said main chain comprising a repeating unit represented by the formula (I): and has a viscosity average molecular weight of at least 10,000 and an acetone soluble content of not more than 3.5 wt%. The polycarbonate can be efficiently produced by the process of the invention. The composition comprises a polycarbonate resin and a specific amount of a phosphorus-based antioxidant.

    High impact resistant polycarbonate, and a polycarbonate resin composition are disclosed. This polycarbonate consists of a main chain with a cumylphenoxy group, as a terminal group, bonded to at least one end thereof, said main chain comprising a repeating unit represented by the formula (I): and has a viscosity average molecular weight of at least 10,000 and an acetone soluble content of not more than 3.5 wt%.     According to this invention, the prior art problem that relatively many steps and a long time are required for obtaining a high quality polycarbonate of a high molecular weight by a solid phase polymerization method has been solved by subjecting a polycarbonate oligomer to swollen solid phase polymerization under an atmosphere containing a swelling solvent gas or subjecting a polycarbonate oligomer to poor solvent solid phase polymerization under a stream of a poor solvent gas.

    A process for producing a polycarbonate by transesterification, wherein a reactor which has been treated by (1) heating, (2) washing with a compound containing carbonyl group, or (3) washing with a specific compound containing hydroxyl group at least at a part which is in contact with a liquid is used; an apparatus for producing a polycarbonate by transesterification which is made of stainless steel at least at a part which is in contact with a liquid, wherein the surface of the part which is in contact with a liquid is in a specific state; and a process for treating the surface of an apparatus to obtain this apparatus. A high molecular weight polycarbonate having an excellent color tone can easily be obtained by transesterification even when an apparatus made of inexpensive stainless steel is used because the surface of the part of the apparatus which is in contact with a liquid has been treated as described above.
