  The new cyclic phosphetane cis- and trans-3-tert-butyl-1-phenylphosphetane (1) was prepared by a heteroatom metallacycle transfer reaction from 3-tert-butyltitanacyclobutane and dichlorophenylphosphine. Phosphetane 1 is stable to polymerization in the presence of electrophllic initiators in solution but forms low oligomers when the neat liquid is heated (>250-degrees-C for 120 h). Phosphetane 1 was employed to form the phosphetane complex cis-dichlorobis(3-tert-butyl-1-phenyl-phosphentane)platinum(II), which was characterized by X-ray diffraction.
