  A bromo-nitro compound of the general formula where R, R1 and R2 can be hydrogen, or a hydrocarbyl group and R can also be R3CO or R3NHCO and n has a value of at least one. R and R1 can both be hydrogen. The value of n is typically one. Compounds of this type have anti-microbial properties, especially anti-bacterial properties. The compounds can be used as industrial biocides, especially in water treatment.
