Electronic spectrophotometry has been empolyed to study the mechanism of transimination in bis(N-alkylsalicylaldiminato)nickel(II) complexes (alkyl = Me, Et, Pri, Prn or Bun) by ammonium ion in acetonitrile. The reaction is clearly biphasic: fast addition of ammonium and slow elimination of alkylammonium ions. Bis(N-methylsalicylaldimine) nickel(II) complex with magnetic moments ranging from 0 to 2·86 B.M. has been isolated. The temperature independent moments are dependent on the temperature of preparation and on the concentration of the amine. The diamagnetism and the values of the magnetic moment lower than the spin-only values are not due to antiferromagnetic interaction. The solution spectra in chloroform
