A new aluminum phenylphosphonate compound with the formula AlH(C6H5PO3)(2) . H2O was obtained by refluxing a mixture of aluminum nitrate and excess phenylphosphonic acid in water. The compound was characterized by elemental analysis, thermal gravimetry, X-ray powder diffraction, and Al-27 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It has a pillared layered structure containing only octahedrally coordinated aluminum atoms, with an interlayer spacing of similar to 15 Angstrom. Copyright (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
