An intramolecular Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction promoted by KF-Alumina involving a N-substituted phthalimide, cleanly and efficiently furnishes an interesting alpha,beta-unsaturated tricyclic enone which may undergo selective alkylations at the alpha'-position.
