  1-Chloro-2,2-diphenylvinylsilver is formed from the corresponding lithium derivative by metathesis with silver chloride. It is stable at low temperatures but decomposes when allowed to warm up to give 1-chloro-2,2-diphenylethylene, diphenylacetylene, and tetraphenylbutatriene. The mechanism of this reaction, which apparently does not involve a free carbene, is discussed.
