  The invention is concerned among other with means and method for determining whether a compound influences a phase in the life cycle of a virus. The invention utilizes the striking observation that cells comprising a nucleic acid encoding an adenovirus early protein or a functional part, derivative and/or analogue of said adenovirus early protein are capable of replicating a wide variety of viruses and thus support all the life cycle steps of these viruses.
