Search for the B Phase in an Achiral Non-symmetric Banana-Shaped Materials

We synthesised a series of banana-shaped materials to search for the B phase in an achiral non-symmetric system. Almost compounds were found to exhibit the B phase, B1 and B2. Interestingly some compounds formed the classical mesophases which were observed in usual rod-like molecular system. In this paper we will report the synthesis and the mesophase properties of these materials.

The present invention is characterized by a smectic liquid crystal compound represented by the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R is selected from alkyl and alkoxy groups; X from ##STR2## m and n are natural numbers; and R* is an optically active group containing an asymmetric carbon atom, and a liquid crystal composition containing said compound as a component. This compound is excellent in optical stability and high-speed response.

The invention relates to Process for the preparation of a layer comprising oriented molecules on a substrate, comprising the steps of

c. forming a splay or bend liquid crystalline structure within the film
d. applying a dose of electromagnetic radiation to the film to at least partly cure the film,

The invention relates to the preparation of three dimensional structures by using a polarization hologram on a coating composition which has a splay orientation.
