3-methoxy-benzanthrones was achieved in two steps by Suzuki–Miyaura coupling and BBr3-promoted Friedel–Craftsacylation under mild conditions with an overall yield of 17–74% and tolerance toward various substrates using commercially available reagents. Fremy'ssaltoxidation of benzyl isoquinoline and aporphine alkaloids to isoquinolones and oxoaporphines is described. Aminium radicals are suggested to account for the observed results. Their possible involvement in alkaloid biosynthesis is considered.
