Chlorobenzenes activated by a single nitro group in the ortho position undergo smooth nucleophilic substitution by the potassium salts of ethyl cyanoacetate and ethyl malonate in tert.-butanol as solvent. The 2-nitrophenyl malonic ester derivates (2a) and (2b) so obtained are easily converted into 2-nitrophenyl acetic acid and derivatives of oxindole and indole respectively.
