Leloir transferases utilise nucleosidediphosphatesugars, which are notoriously difficult to synthesise and handle. Starting off from d- or l-configurated glycals, a facile synthesis of nucleotide sugars by epoxidation and direct coupling with uridine diphosphate is described.
