    Diphenylsulfene (5) and diphenyl-alpha-sultine 6 were generated in cryogenic matrices by three independent routes: (i) the thermal reaction of diphenylcarbene (8) and SO2, (ii) the photochemically induced hetero Wolff rearrangement of sulfonylcarbene 11, and (iii) oxygen transfer from ozone to diphenylsulfine 16. Isotopic labeling with C-13 and O-18 allows for the assignment of several characteristic IR vibrations of 5. Irradiation with lambda > 375 nm results in the rearrangement of 5 to 6, which is the first alpha-sultine that has been characterized spectroscopically. The final Product on UV irradiation of 6 is benzophenone (9) and sulfur monoxide.

    Covalent, irreversible small-molecule inhibitors that modify the sulfenyl form (i.e., sulfenic acid, RSOH and sulfenamide, RSNR'2) of therapeutically important proteins (particularly kinases and phosphatases) are disclosed, where the compositions include a compound having a substituted aryl or heterocyclic core structure that promotes binding interactions with a specific protein, and a nucleophilic reaction center (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, or phosphorous) that is capable of forming a covalent bond with a sulfenic acid- or sulfenamide-modified cysteine residue in the protein. Methods for synthesizing these compounds are also disclosed, as well as methods of using them for determining the bioactivity of a chemical composition comprising an active compound toward a specific protein and for determining the potency of an inhibitor against a specific protein.

    Provided is a method of manufacturing a bipyridinium compound denoted by general formula (A). In general formula (A), Ar 1 and Ar 2 each independently denote an optionally substituted (hetero)aryl group, R 3 and R 4 each independently denote a substituent that may form a ring with a pyridine ring to which the substituent substitutes, m3 and m4 each independently denote an integer ranging from 0 to 4, X denotes a halogen atom or RSO 3 , and R denotes an optionally substituted aryl group or alkyl group. The method can manufacture a 4,4′-bipyridinium compound under mild reaction conditions in an integrated manner without separation of intermediates.

    There is disclosed a liquid ink comprising a photo acid generating agent that generates an acid upon irradiation with light, a coloring component, and at least one kind of a solvent that is polymerized in the presence of an acid. It is preferable that the amount of the photo acid generating agent contained in the liquid ink falls within a range of between 1 part by weight and 10 parts by weight relative to 100 parts by weight of the solvent, the coloring component consists of a pigment, and the solvent contains at least 50 parts by weight of an acid polymerizable compound, the acid polymerizing compound polymerizing in the presence of the acid, having an alicyclic skeleton and/or an aliphatic skeleton having a viscosity of 50 mPa·s or less and a boiling point of 150°C or more under room temperature and atmospheric pressure.
