  A new binary compound in the rhodium-gallium system has been synthesized. Rh3Ga5 crystallizes in the triclinic space group P (1) over bar with the unit cell parameters a=4.961(1) Angstrom, b=6.655(1) Angstrom, c=7.870(3) Angstrom, alpha=100.76(3)degrees, beta=104.67(3)degrees, gamma=101.50(3)degrees. Its crystal structure can be described in terms of strongly distorted close packed layers that are broken in some places by less dense packing. An alternative polyhedral description of the structure is also presented. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
