The chemical reactivity of chromone-3-carboxamide was studied towards a series of nitrogen and carbon nucleophiles. Treatment of carboxamide with some primary amines gave chromane-2,4-diones. Condensation of carboxamide with hydrazine hydrate, phenyl hydrazine and hydroxylamine hydrochloride afforded chromenopyrazoles and chromenoisoxazole, respectively. Processes for making metal complexes that are useful in organic light emitting devices M (OLEDs) involve reacting a volatile liquid metal compound with a compound that has at least one hydroxyl (OH) group, such as 8-hydroxyquinoline. Exemplary volatile liquid metal compounds include trimethylaluminum, triethylaluminum, triisobutylaluminum, diisobutylaluminum hydride, dimethylaluminum chloride, and diethylaluminum chloride. One useful metal complex that can be produced is tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq3).

The title compounds were prepared via intermediates resulting from reactions of 3-formyl-4-hydroxycoumarin (1) with omicron-phenylenediamine, omicron-aminophenol, and omicron-aminothiophenol, respectively. Intramolecular ring closures were effected between the free hydroxy and amino or thiol groups.
