Four binuclear cadmium(II) macrocyclic complexes have been synthesized by [2+2] Schiff base condensation of tris(3-aminopropyl)amine (trpn) with sodium 2,6-diformyl-4-R-phenolate (R = CH3, L(1); R = CH3O, L(2); R = Br, L(3); R = Cl, L(4)) in the presence of Cd(ClO4)(2) . 6H(2)O. The crystal structure of the complex [Cd(2)L(2)](ClO4)(2) . 0.5CH(3)OH has been determined by X-ray diffraction. The crystal is triclinic, space group P--1(#2), a = 10.455(6) Angstrom, b = 11.451(4) Angstrom, c = 20.130(6) Angstrom, Z = 2, alpha = 105.75(3)degrees, beta = 82.84(3)degrees, gamma = 97.21(3)degrees, V = 2291(2) Angstrom(3), F(000) = 1122, R = 0.052, R(w) = 0.064. The crystal structure, spectral characterization and molar conductivity show that two cadmium(II) ions are bridged by two mu(2)-phenoxy oxygen atoms. Each cadmium(II) atom is located in a N4O2 coordination environment. The coordination geometry around the Cd(II) is a distorted octahedron.
