β-Substituted organolithium compounds; direct preparation and reactivity

Very reactive organolithiumcompounds bearing an alkoxide function at the β-position with respect to the metal are obtained by direct metallation with lithium naphthalenide at low temperature of the corresponding lithium chlorhydrin salt; the reaction of these dianions with different electrophilic agents leads to the corresponding mono- and bi-functionalized compounds.

Organocerium compounds (RLi-CeCl3) are able to transfer an alkyl group to the carbonylic function of a β-hydroxyketone giving alkyl substituted 1,3-diols in excellent yields. The use of these not sophisticated reagents is essential to depress undesired dimetallation and retroaldol side processes.
