Amide ions were formed by the deprotonation of the amino group of amino- and (monoalkylamino)anthraquinones in the presence of powdered potassium hydroxide in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Under a nitrogen atmosphere these amide ions changed to their radical anions.
