Odorless substitutes for foul-smelling thiols: syntheses and applications
Several alkanethiols and p-alkylphenylmethanethiols were synthesized, and their odors were compared with those of ethanethiol and benzyl mercaptan by human and instrumental sensors. Among the various thiols analyzed. 1-dodecanethiol (1) and p-heptylphenylmethanethiol (3) were revealed to be odorless. 1-Dodecanethiol (1) has been used instead of ethanethiol for dealkylation of ethers, and p-heptylphenylmethanethiol (3) can replace benzyl mercaptan in the preparation of a 1,3-mercapto alcohol from an alpha, beta -unsaturated ketone. These odorless thiols will greatly improve the physical environment of the researcher working with these foul-smelling compounds. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

(EN) The present invention relates to foam compositions which are expanded with hydrohalocarbon blowing agents in the presence of additives which decrease the formation of haloalkenes during the polymerization. Thus, the present invention provides compositions comprising polyisocyanate, polyol, hydrohalocarbon blowing agent, catalyst, surfactant, and at least one additive wherein the additive is capable of decreasing the amount of decomposition of said hydrohalocarbon blowing agent to haloalkenes during polymerization of the polyisocyanate and the polyol. Depending upon the polyol and polyisocyanate used and the quantity of polisocyanate used, the compositions may be used in pour-in-place molded foams; rigid urethane spray foams; rigid high and low density foams for slabstock, froth foams, and molded foams; rigid laminated boardstock; or specialty foams.(FR) L'invention concerne des compositions de mousse expansées avec des agents porogènes à base d'hydrohalocarbure en présence d'additifs diminuant la formation d'haloalcènes pendant la polymérisation.
