    The Hammett correlation between distyrylbenzene substituents and chemiluminescence efficiency providing various ρ-values for peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence of several oxalates

    Peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence (PO-CL) was investigated using eight oxalates with various phenol moieties and the distyrylbenzene (DSB) fluorophores with various substituents. The rho-values in the Hammett correlation between the substituent constants (sigma(+)(p)) of the DSBs and the singlet chemiexcitation yields (Phi(s)) for the PO-CL reactions varied from -0.50 to -1.01 depending on the oxalate structure, and the reactive oxalates tended to afford the higher absolute rho-values but with a few exceptions. Based on the CIEEL mechanism, these experimental observations suggest that the aryloxy groups still remain in the 1,2-dioxetanones (DOTs), which are the postulated high-energy intermediates, and control the electronic properties of DOTs as electron-acceptors. The LUMO energies of the DOTs calculated by the ab initio method with a B3LYP/6-31g(d) basis set reveal that the lower the DOT-LUMO energies, the higher the absolute rho-values were provided for the corresponding oxalates, as predicted by the frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory. Thus, the chemical species interacting with the DSBs would be not unitary and will be DOTs. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    In one embodiment the present invention is a polycarbonate comprising structural units derived from at least one dihydric phenol, a carbonate precursor, and at least one member selected from the group consisting of an oxanilide-comprising compound, an oxamate-comprising compound, and mixtures thereof. In another embodiment the present invention is a method for making a polycarbonate comprising structural units derived from at least one dihydric phenol and at least one member selected from the group consisting of an oxanilide-comprising compound, an oxamate-comprising compound, and mixtures thereof, which comprises the step of contacting under reactive conditions at least one dihydric phenol, a carbonate precursor, and at least one member selected from the group consisting of an oxanilide-comprising compound, an oxamate-comprising compound, and mixtures thereof. In still another embodiment the present invention is an article comprising a polycarbonate comprising oxanilide structural units. In still another embodiment the present invention is a method for making a symmetrical or unsymmetrical oxanilide-comprising dihydric phenol which comprises the step of contacting at least one aromatic amine bearing a hydroxy group with a diaryl oxalate or a dialkyl oxalate bearing alkyl groups each substituted with at least one electron-withdrawing group. In still another embodiment the present invention is a method for making an oxamate-comprising monohydric phenol which comprises the step of contacting an aromatic amine bearing a hydroxy group with a diaryl oxalate or a dialkyl oxalate bearing alkyl groups each substituted with at least one electron-withdrawing group.

    An improved process for preparing a diaryl carbonate from a diaryl oxalate in a liquid phase by decarbonylation utilizes a reaction vessel composed of two or more reaction chambers which are connected in series. The process is composed of the steps of continuously introducing the diaryl oxalate and an organic phosphorus compound having a trivalent or pentavalent phosphorus atom and at least one carbon-phosphorus bonding into the first chamber and continuously recovering a reaction mixture mainly containing the diaryl carbonate from the last chamber under the condition that a mixture of the diaryl oxalate and the organic phosphorus compound is heated in the reaction chambers, while discharging carbon monoxide released from the mixture.

    A process for preparing a diaryl carbonate from a diaryl oxalate in a liquid phase by decarbonylation is conducted by the steps of: 1) performing a decarbonylation reaction of a diaryl oxalate in the presence of an organic phosphorus compound catalyst to give a reaction mixture of a diaryl carbonate and the organic phosphorus compound catalyst; 2) recovering the diaryl carbonate from the reaction mixture; and 3) performing a decarbonylation reaction of a diaryl oxalate in the presence of the reaction mixture from which the diaryl carbonate has been recovered and to which a halogen atom-containing compound is added, to give a reaction mixture of a diaryl carbonate and the organic phosphorus compound catalyst.

    A continuous process for the manufacture of a polycarbonate comprises: combining an aromatic dihydroxy compound stream and a diaryl carbonate stream to form a mixture; controlling a weight or molar ratio of the diaryl carbonate to the aromatic dihydroxy compound by: measuring a sound velocity, Vs, in the mixture at an operating temperature of the controlling step; and determining the weight or molar ratio of the diaryl carbonate to the aromatic dihydroxy compound in the mixture; and adjusting a flow rate of at least one of the aromatic dihydroxy compound stream and the diaryl carbonate stream, if needed, to achieve a desired weight or molar ratio of the diaryl carbonate to the aromatic dihydroxy compound; and polymerizing the aromatic dihydroxy compound and the diaryl carbonate in the presence of a catalyst to produce the polycarbonate.
