    The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of dimethylketene (DMK) and then of polydimethylketene (PDMK) by polymerization of DMK. More specifically, the DMK is obtained by pyrolysis by isobutyric anhydride (IBAN), the latter decomposing under the effect of heat (pyrolysis) to give isobutyric acid (IBA) and DMK. One mole of pyrolyzed IBAN gives one mole of IBA and one mole of DMK.

    A process for forming useful oligomers and higher homopolymers of 1,3- or 1,4- bis(1-chloro-1-methylethyl)benzene is disclosed which comprises polymerizing a 1,3- or 1,4-bis(1-chloro-1-methylethyl) benzene and an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal cyanate in a solvent for the organic reactant and the substantial absence of a catalyst at temperatures of between about 15°C. and about 60°C. until formation of the oligomers and homopolymers is substantially complete. The oligomers and homopolymers produced are related to poly-TMI type polymers and are useful together with active polyurethane coating and or injection moldable compositions.

Preferred examples thereof include a composition comprising 100 parts by weight of a polycarbonate as the component (A) and 5 to 20 parts by weight of a styrene/isobutylene block copolymer having a styrene unit content of 10 to 45 % and an average molecular weight of 50,000 to 400,000 as the component (B).
