    A novel copper-catalyzed method for the direct esterification of P(O)–OH compounds using phenols as efficient esterification reagents is illustrated. It is a simple way to generate a broad spectrum of functionalized O-aryl phosphinates, phosphonates, and phosphates from basic starting materials with moderate to excellent yields.

    An object of the present invention is to provide a flame retardant composition having such a property that a flame retardant component is adhered in a larger amount onto a fiber than that in the case of a flame retardant composition that has heretofore been used. In order to achieve the obj ect, the present invention provides a flame retardant composition, including: at least one phosphorus compound represented by the following general formula (1) or (2); a cationic surfactant; and a nonionic surfactant: in the formula (1), A represents a divalent hydrocarbon group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, n represents a number of from 1 to 10, and R1 to R8 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; in the formula (2), R9 to R14 each independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and r1, r2, and r3 each independently represent a number of 1 or 0.
