A set of m-terphenylenes having a readily functionalizable hydroxy group as well as either symmetric AA-type or unsymmetric AB-type halide termini have been prepared on a several-gram scale. The synthesis was carried out on the basis of the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling in combination with a TMS masking strategy.

Selective synthesis of [6]-cyclometaphenylene ([6]-CMP) was realized through a one-pot method utilizing a confined nanoreactor. The yield was up to 15%, which was 275% higher than that of homogeneous catalyst. The preliminary derivatization of [6]-CMP led to the production of amphiphilic macrocycles capable of self-assembly in solution, thereby expanding the scope of CMP synthesis and applications
