  A Cu/chiral bipyridine catalyst has been developed for the asymmetric insertion of alpha-diazocarbonyl compounds into the N-H bonds of carbamates to generate an array of easily deprotected arylglycines in good ee. With respect to the reaction partners, as well as the ligand, this process complements the only other report of highly enantioselective N-H insertion reactions.

  There are disclosed a compound having the following formula: in which R' denotes an aromatic group; Z represents a group (wherein R' denotes hydrogen, a salt forming cation or a protective group for carboxylic acid, and R' denotes hydrogen or a residue of a nucleophilic compound); and X' and X2 each represent hydrogen or a halogen atom, provided that both X' and X2 cannot represent hydrogen at the same time; processes for preparing the same; and an intermediate compound useful for preparing the same. The above mentioned compound has a broad antibacterial spectrum and shows strong antibacterial activities against not only gram-positive bacteria but also the gram-negative bacteria, particularly the resistive gram-negative bacteria.
