Treatment of allylic electrophiles containing an additional alkene moiety in a suitable position with CO, NEt3, MeOH, and a catalytic amount of a Pd catalyst, e.g., Cl2Pd(PPh3)2, can induce cyclic acylmetallation followed by carbonylative esterification to produce α-methoxycarbonylmethyl cyclopentenones.
