A process for producing polysuccinimide comprising polycondensing a monomer selected from aspartic acid, maleamic acid, a reaction product of maleic acid and ammonia, and a mixture thereof in the presence of a specific phosphorous acid compound, preferably triphenyl phosphite or tributyl phosphite. Polysuccinimide having a reduced residual monomer content and an increased molecular weight is produced efficiently. This compound can be used as a chelating agent, a scale inhibitor, a builder, a dispersant, a humectant or an additive for fertilizers.
