substitution effect of the position of the bromo group on the photosensitivity of the 8-azacoumarin chromophore leads to the development of a highly photosensitive 8-aza-3-bromo-7-hydroxycoumarin-4-ylmethyl (aza-3-Bhc) group that shows excellent photolytic efficiency and hydrophilicity with long-wavelength absorption maxima. The newly identified aza-3-Bhc group can be applied to caged glutamates for

Protecting groups derived from a halogenated coumarin group, a quinoline-2-one group, a xanthene group, a thioxanthene group, a selenoxanthene group, or an anthracene group are described. The protecting groups is photolabile and can be removed by irradiating the group with light, such as flash photolysis with ultraviolet radiation or pulsed infrared radiation.

The synthesis and photochemistry of a new photolabile protecting group for carboxylic acids based on 8-bromo-7-hydroxyquinoline (BHQ) is described. BHQ possesses a greater single photon quantum efficiency than 4,5-dimethoxy-4-nitrobenzyl ester (DMNB) and 6-bromo-7-hydroxycoumarin-4-ylmethyl (Bhc), and it has sufficient sensitivity to multiphoton-induced photolysis for use in vivo. Its increased solubility
A class of photo-caged and cell permeable fluorescent molecules having high uncaging cross sections, robust fluorescence enhancement, and flexible chemistry for bioconjugation. Some of the photo-caged fluorescent molecules are derived from 6-chloro-7-hydroxy-coumarin 3-carboxamide. The fluorescent molecules are useful for cellular imaging applications and particularly for tracing the molecular transfer between cellular gap junctions. The fluorescent molecules also have an emission wavelength that spectrally complements with the emission wavelength of other fluorophores, enabling simultaneous multi-color imaging.
