    Reactions of β-diketiminatoaluminum hydrides with tert-butyl hydrogenperoxide – Facile formation of dialuminoxanes containing Al–O–Al groups

    Treatment of diphenyl-beta-diketiminatoaluminum dihydride, LAlH(2) [1, L = {H(5)C(6)-N = C(Me)}(2)CH] with neo-pentyl- or trimethylsilylmethyllithium afforded the corresponding alkylderivatives LAlH(R) [R = CH(2)-SiMe(3) (2), CH(2)-CMe(3) (3)] by the precipitation of lithium hydride. Deprotonation of a methyl group instead of salt elimination occurred by the similar reaction of the more basic alkyllithium compound LiC (SiMe(3))(3). The reactions of the hydrides 1-3 with tert-butyl hydrogenperoxide did not yield the expected peroxo derivatives, instead the dialuminoxanes LAl(R)-O-Al(R)L [R = OCMe(3) (5), CH(2)SiMe(3) (6), CH(2)CMe(3) (7)] were isolated in high yields. Their Al-O-Al bridges deviated from linearity and had Al-O-Al bond angles of about 155 degrees on average. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    The alane complexes (C5H7N2R2)AlH2 (2) (R= Me,Pr-i, Ph) are obtained from the vinamidines C5H8N2R2 (1) and Me3N . AlH3 as reactive solids in good yields. Excess hydride reagent affords the formation of perhydrogenated ring systems from which {(C11H24N2)Al2H4}(2) (6) could be prepared in a preparative scale. The X-ray structures of (C5H7N2Me2)AlH2 (2a) and ((C5H7N2Pr2)-Pr-i)AlH2 (2b) exhibit the expected near planar ring geometries. In 6. two units of (C11H2SN2)Al2H4 (5) are connected via hydrogen bridges to form a central planar Al2H2 core.

    The diiodoalanes (C5H7R2N2)AlI2 [6; R = Me (a), Ph (c)] are obtained from the corresponding alanes (C5H7R2N2)AlH2 (5) and [Me3NH]I in good yields. (C5H7R2N2)AlI2 [6; R = iso-Pr (b)] is alternatively prepared, as well as 6a, from the corresponding vinamidine lithium compound C5H7R2NLi (8) and AlI3.     A monomeric AlI compound is used as a stoichiometric reducing agent towards a series of AlIII dihydrides. This leads to the formation of new low oxidation state species including symmetric and asymmetric dihydrodialanes, and a masked dialumene. The transient formation of new, previously inaccessible AlI species is demonstrated through reactivity studies and theory.
