  • The Direct Iodination of Arenes with Chromium(VI) Oxide as the Oxidant

    An easy and cheap laboratory method is presented for the direct mono- and diiodination of a number of activated and deactivated arenes. The main iodination reactions occurred at the temperatures not exceeding 65 °C for 0.5—12 h in the anhydrous, strongly acidic liquid system, I2/AcOH/Ac2O/H2SO4, in the presence of prior dissolved CrO3 used as the oxidant. The yields of the pure iodinated products varied from 31% (for 3,5-diiodobenzoic acid) up to 90% (for 4-iodoanisole). So far, benzonitrile and some oxidizable aromatics, e.g. naphthalene, fluorene, xanthene, and thiophene, have been found to be unsuitable for the effective iodination. Nevertheless, this novel, simple method of direct iodination is worthy to be extended to other appropriate aromatics.

    Disclosed is an aryl ether sulfone of the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is independently in each occurrence hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, polyhaloaryl, polyhaloaryloxy, polyhaloalkylaryl, or polyhaloalkylaryloxy, R.sup.2 is independently in each occurrence hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, aryloxy, polyhaloaryl, polyhaloaryloxy, polyhaloalkylaryl, or polyhaloalkylaryloxy, and n is a whole number from 1 to 5. Also disclosed is a lubricant composition which comprises a lubricating fluid and an aryl ether sulfone as shown above, wherein the aryl ether sulfone is present in an amount sufficient to increase the lubricity of the lubricating fluid component.

    A method is provided for recovering poly(arylene sulfide) from a mixture comprising a liquid-phase poly(arylene sulfide) and a polar organic compound, wherein the liquid mixture is contacted by an amount of a liquid, vaporized, or mixed phase separation agent at least sufficient to effect or enhance a phase separation of the liquid-phase poly(arylene sulfide) component from the polar organic compound. The poly(arylene sulfide) resins recovered according to this invention generally exhibit uniform particle size and do not tend to adhere to vessel walls during the recovery.

    A monomer containing an electron-withdrawing group and an electron-donative group which can be easily controlled in the upper limit of the amount of a sulfonic acid , which impairs the mechanical properties of a copolymer, and can provide a sulfonated polymer that forms a proton-conductive membrane having a high proton conductivity over a wide temperature range, an excellent mechanical strength and an excellent proton conductivity and showing inhibited swelling in hot water and an aqueous solution of methanol, and a copolymer obtained from the monomer. A monomer containing an electron-withdrawing group and an electron-donative group represented by the following general formula (1) : wherein Y represents a iodine atom, chlorine atom or bromine atom; X represents an electron-withdrawing group; B represents an electron-donative group; and Z represents an aryl group having a specific structure or a monovalent condensed ring hydrocarbon group such as naphthyl group.
