Under microwave irradiation, cyclopropane hemimalonates undergo rapid conversion to butanolides in the presence of inorganic salts with an unprecedented retention of stereochemistry. This unique process has been applied to the total synthesis of the naturally occurring (R)-dodecan-4-olide.
