  Compositions for the treatment of cancer comprising coumarin and thiocoumarin derivatives of Formulas I- XII are disclosed. Said derivatives preferentially inhibit carbonic anhydrase IX and XII (which are associated with hypoxic and metastatic tumours) over inhibiting carbonic anhydrase I and II activity.
