The present invention provides a compound of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt or in-vivo hydrolysable ester thereof: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is hydrogen or an amino protecting group and R is substituted methyl; optionally substituted C.sub.2-12 alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; carbocyclyl; aryl or heterocyclyl. These compounds have antibacterial properties, and therefore are of use in the treatment of bacterial infections in humans and animals caused by a wide range of organisms.

Direct C–H alkylation of aldehydes represents a straightforward and step-economy strategy for modular access to ketones. Herein, we report a direct C–H alkylation of aldehydes with alkyl bromides to generate ketones under cooperative NHC/Pd catalysis at room temperature. Secondary and the difficult-to-obtain tertiary alkyl-derived ketones could be prepared through this simple process under mild conditions
A nickel-catalyzed three-components reductive protocol for the group 14 elements hetero-difunctionalizations via electrochemistry is described. The cascade reaction proceeded smoothly with the diverse chlorosilanes, 1,3-enynes, primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl bromides. Good chemo- and regioselectivities were achieved. This protocol could be extended to germanyl- and stannylalkylation of 1,3-enynes
