Four new solid and soluble adducts of triaryl- and alkylphosphine oxides, like the displayed -TolPO·AlCl, have been synthesized. The characterization includes X-ray structures and Al solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The adducts are more resistant towards hydrolysis than neat AlCl and highly soluble in organic solvents. The adducts are active catalysts for the oxidative esterification of aldehydes.
