Oxidation of a series of phenols with cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate (CAN) in acetonitrile under mild conditions yields the mixture of corresponding nitrophenols. In the cases of methylphenols and hydroxy -carboxylic acids, the steric effect may reduce the nitration reaction.
