    Geometrical entropies. The extended entropy

    By taking into account a geometrical interpretation of the measurement process [1,2], we define a set of measures of uncertainty. These measures will be called geometrical entropies. The amount of information is defined by considering the metric structure in the probability space. Shannon-von Neumann entropy is a particular element of this set. We show the incompatibility between this element and the concept of variance as a measure of the statistical fluctuations. When the probability space is endowed with the generalized statistical distance proposed in reference [3], we obtain the extended entropy. This element, which belongs to the set of geometrical entropies: is fully compatible with the concept of variance. Shannon-von Neumann entropy is recovered as an approximation of the extended entropy. The behavior of both entropies is compared in the case of a particle in a square-well potential.

    The results of observations of the radio emission profiles of the Geminga pulsar at 102.5, 87, 58, and 39 MHz are reported. Individual pulses are presented for the first time, and rare occasions of strong emission over the entire pulsar rotation period have been detected. A detailed analysis of the shapes, durations, and arrival phases of the pulses at 102.5 MHz is presented. These data reflect the unique character of the radio emission of Geminga.

  • Absence of Drug Interaction between Oral Moxifloxacin and Intramuscular Morphine Sulfate in Healthy Volunteers

    To determine the effects of intramuscular morphine sulfate on the pharmacokinetics of moxifloxacin. This was a single-centre, randomised, two-way, nonblinded crossover study in healthy young males and females. 20 healthy volunteers (15 males, five females) with a mean age of 34 years were enrolled and considered evaluable for the pharmacokinetic analysis. Moxifloxacin was given under two conditions separated by a minimum 7-day washout period: alone as a single oral 400mg dose, and immediately following 10mg of intramuscular morphine sulfate. Concentrations of moxifloxacin in serum were determined by a validated HPLC procedure with fluorescence detection. Pharmacokinetic parameters estimated were maximum serum concentration (Cmax), time to reach Cmax (tmax), area under the concentration-time curve from zero to infinity (AUC∞), and terminal elimination half-life (t1/2). The natural logarithms of AUC∞ and Cmax were compared by analysis of variance. The mean moxifloxacin serum concentration vs time profiles were similar between the two treatments. The geometric least square mean Cmax values for moxifloxacin were 3.42 mg/L when given alone vs 2.85 mg/L with morphine, producing a ratio (moxifloxacin with morphine vs moxifloxacin alone) of 0.83, with a 90% confidence interval (CI) about the ratio of 0.71 to 0.98. The geometric mean AUC∞ values for moxifloxacin alone and with morphine were 41.5 and 39.6 mg/L·h; the ratio of means was 0.96, with a 90% CI of 0.87 to 1.04. tmax and t1/2 values for moxifloxacin were unchanged when coadministered with morphine. The single oral dose of moxifloxacin 400mg was well tolerated when taken with and without morphine sulfate. Administration of a single intramuscular dose of morphine did not reduce the bioavailability or alter the elimination profile of oral moxifloxacin. These results suggest that concurrent administration of intramuscular morphine and oral moxifloxacin is unlikely to reduce the efficacy of the quinolone.
