Correlation of Antitumor Activity and Electron Deficiency of Nitrofuranylhydrazone Compounds

Phenylhydrazone derivatives of 5-nitro-2-furaldehyde were tested for antitumor activity against L-1210 murine leukemia in vitro. A substantial increase in antitumor activity was observed in these series of compounds as the electron deficiency of the six-membered aromatic ring was increased. A possible mechanism of action involving drug reduction as well as antibacterial and antitumor efficacy is discussed
