    Three new oligostilbenes, trans-suffruticosol D (1), cis-suffruticosol D (2), and cis-gnetin H (7), were isolated along with the eight known stilbenes, trans-resveratrol (3), trans-ε-viniferin (4), cis-ε-viniferin (5), gnetin H (6), suffruticosol A (8), suffruticosol B (9), suffruticosol C (10), and cis-ampelopsin E (11) from the seeds of Paeonia suffruticosa. Compounds 3—6 were isolated for the first time from this plant species, and compound 11 was isolated for the first time from the genus Paeonia. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated based on spectral analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR experiments. The absolute configuration of compound 1 was determined by quantum chemical calculation of the electronic circular dichroism and comparison with the experimental circular dichroism spectrum.

    The cis-isomer and trans-isomers of the plant-derived compound gnetin H are shown have anticancer properties, anti-inflammatory properties, and low toxicity. Therapeutic and prophylactic compositions that contain cis-gnetin H, trans-gnetin H, and derivatives thereof, as well as methods of making and using said compositions, are provided. cis-gnetin H and/or trans-gnetin H can be used in purified form or as a plant extract.

    A method is described for the extraction of products having a pharmacological activity, in particular an immunomodulating activity, from spermatophyte plants. Said products, which are to be used in the pharmaceutical fields, consist of complex mixtures of compounds characterized by one or more stilbene groups, variously hydroxylated and/or glucosidated, and of compounds derived from said group by natural enzymatic biosynthetical processes (stilbenoids). The following compounds are preferred: T-Res, C-Res, glucosidated C-Res, ε-viniferine, H-gnetine, r-2-viniferine, r-viniferine, hopeaphenol, Ampelopepsin A and glucosidated T-Res.
