    4-naphthoquinone (aureoquinone) and 3-ethyl-2,5,7,8-tetrahydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone, respectively. An alternative selective synthetic route to 3-ethyl-2-hydroxy-5,7,8-trimethoxy-6-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone was also developed utilizing an intramolecular Claisen condensation of methyl 2-butyryl-3,5,6-trimethoxy-4-methylphenylacetate with concomitant in situ aerial oxidation.

    The structure of mompain, a metabolite of Helicobasidium mompa, was established as 2, 5, 7, 8-tetrahydroxy-1, 4-naphthoquinone (IIa). Deoxyhelicobasin was isolated and the structure was elucidated as Ib. Biosynthesis of helicobasidin (Ia) was studied and its isoprenoid origin has been clarified.

    A concise and versatile route to functionalised naphthazarins via 1,3,4,5,6,8-hexamethoxynaphthalene is described and is illustrated with the synthesis of three natural products, aureoquinone, boryquinone and 3-ethyl-2,7-dihydroxynaphthazarin.

    A series of substituted (poly)hydroxylated naphthazarins (5.8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinones) were synthesized. In general, (poly) hydroxynaphthazarins exist in organic aprotic solvents as mixtures of tautomeric 1,4-naphthoquinonoid forms (IR data). The ratio of tautomers was determined for the first time.
