    Aqueous coating compositions include an anionic species-scavenging system. The scavenging system includes an aqueous dispersion of water-insoluble, weak base-functional polymer particles. The particles are polymerized from monomer including a weak base-functional monomer such as 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate or 2-(t-butylamino)-ethyl methacrylate. A two stage process may be employed to prepare the particles and 2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl methacrylate may be included only in the initial stage. Alternatively, a single stage process may be employed using 2-(t-butylamino)methacrylate. The system also includes a volatile base such as ammonia to maintain the pH of the composition above the pKa of the weak base prior to and during application of the composition. As the volatile base is lost, the weak base is protonated and forms ion pairs with anionic species such as anionic surfactant. The compositions form coatings having good water resistance, and may be used as paints, paper coatings, caulking materials, adhesives, binders for non-woven products and for floor polishes and printing inks.

    A method of marking substrates and marked containers are disclosed. A method comprises the steps of applying and curing a coating composition comprising (a) a matrix forming material comprising an inorganic oxide or inorganic oxide precursor, and (b) an organic pore forming agent. The marking is provided by removing at least a portion of the organic pore forming agent in a selected location of the coating layer. The marking may be provided on a container with a product or heat-sensitive product inside. Additional embodiments relate to multi-layer coatings and methods for forming multi-layer coatings.

    The invention relates to a method of making hybrid organic-inorganic core-shell nano-particles, comprising the steps of a) providing colloidal organic particles comprising a synthetic polyampholyte as a template; b) adding at least one inorganic oxide precursor; and c) forming a shell layer from the precursor on the template to result in core-shell nano-particles. With this method it is possible to make colloidal organic template particles having an average particle size in the range of 10 to 300 nm; which size can be controlled by the comonomer composition of the polyampholyte, and/or by selecting dispersion conditions. The invention also relates to organic-inorganic or hollow-inorganic core-shell nano-particles obtained with this method, to compositions comprising such nano-particles, to different uses of said nano-particles and compositions, and to products comprising or made from said nano-particles and compositions, including anti-reflective coatings and composite materials.
