diaryl ethers have been irradiated in solution. The reactions observed are: (1) cleavage of the ether bond(s) followed by H-abstraction from the solvent yielding phenols and benzene derivatives, and (2) a photo-Claisen type rearrangement yielding 2- and/or 4-hydroxybiphenyl derivatives.
