The synthesis of several symmetrical polyaromatic compounds with pyridine or diazine units has been achieved by homocoupling of aryl halides with Pd(OAc)2 as catalyst. Cross-coupling reactions of aryl Grignard reagents with Fe(acac)3 as catalyst allowed the synthesis of various unsymmetrical polyaryl- or polyheteroaryl compounds with TTπ-deficient rings.

An efficient procedure for cross-coupling of 3-bromopyridine and 4-bromoanisole to various mono- and dichloro heteroaryl compounds—giving the corresponding biaryls in 74–96% yield—is described.

We report a robust and broadlyapplicable CoCl2‐catalyzed cross‐coupling between functionalized aryl and heteroaryl zinc pivalates and various electron‐poor aryl and heteroaryl halides (X=Cl, Br, I). Couplings with (E)‐ or (Z)‐bromo‐ or iodo‐alkenes proceed with retention of configuration. Also, alkynyl bromides react with arylzinc pivalates providing arylated alkynes.
