α-Hydroxycarboxylic acids () reacted with N-sulfinylanilines () to give the corresponding α-hydroxyanilides () in quantitative yields under mild condition: the reaction appears to involve intermolecular catalysis by the carboxylic acid moiety and intramolecular catalysis by the hydroxyl group.

The efficient synthesis of α-hydroxy-amides has been achieved by the direct amidation of lacticacid using primary amines. The reactions proceed smoothly under solvent-free conditions without using any catalyst. In general, good to excellent yields of products are obtained.
