Planar–rotor architecture based pyrene–vinyl–tetraphenylethylene conjugated systems: photophysical properties and aggregation behavior

Pyrene–tetraphenylethylene based monomers and tetramers were synthesized. Photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated. Spacer, architecture and substituent dependent aggregation behavior were reported.
Photolysis of 1-bromo-2, 2-bis(p-alkoxyphenyl)-1-phenylethenes in the presence of sodium ethoxide in ethanol gave ipso adducts bearing 1,2-aryl rearranged structure, indicating that ipso substitution proceeds via vinylcations.

Photolysis of 1-(p-methoxyphenyl)vinyl bromides in the presence of cyanide anion provided 1-cyano-1-(p-cyanophenyl)ethylenes and 3,10-dicyanophenanthrenes . These were proven to be formed via a vinyl cation.
