The invention provides novel phospholipids having the formula (I) wherein X is a group for covalently attaching the phospholipid to a target molecule, optionally through the use of a coupling agent, and comprises at least one carbon atom; either i) Y is 0, Z is H and R is -OCOR1, or ii) Y is NH, Z is OH and R is -(CH)2R1; and R1 and R2 are independently selected from unsubstituted and substituted alkyl and alkenyl groups, and mixtures thereof. The phospholipids may be derivatised with a wide variety of target molecules, including fluorescent dyes for labelling cells or cell compartments.
